FMF at Work in Austin at Special Session Coming Up! Tomorrow, a special session in Texas Legislature will begin, and we will be there, watching for opportunities and standing up for your values! The special session is expected to last only a few days to consider a few issues that did not reach a vote in the regular session. As of today, only three issues are confirmed to be discussed in the special session, all of which deal in some way with the Department of Transportation and other state agencies. However, the Senators and Representatives can vote to suspend the rules to bring up other legislation, such as the Choose Life license plate, or legislation that threatens your values.

Another Big Win for Free Speech in the Courts!
Just this week, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in Texas ruled for free speech in a case in which our attorneys helped! A Jewish man who used his column on a magazine website to speak out against a Muslim Family Day at Six Flags Over Texas was sued by a number of Islamic groups, who tried to silence his opposition to the event. However, following a dangerous ruling in the district court allowing court-ordered censorship of a news website, the Second Circuit overturned the ruling and affirmed the right of citizens to express their opinions on news websites. |
Take a Stand on Taxes!
This Saturday is Independence Day, and Americans all over the nation will gather this week to continue the message broadcast on April 15th - "NO NEW TAXES!" Tea party events will take place all over the state, including an Austin Tea Party at which Jonathan Saenz, director of legislative affairs, will speak and encourage attendees to take their message to both Washington, D.C., and our state capital! There's never been a more important time to speak out on how you feel about new taxes, since the U.S. House of Representatives voted last week to pass the "cap-and-trade" bill, which will increase taxes on all kinds of energy, including gas and most electricity! In fact, if this is passed by the Senate, gas taxes are expected to rise by 77 cents on the gallon, 83 cents for jet fuel, and 88 cents for diesel fuel!
