On the last day of August, The Supreme Court of Texas ruled against government restrictions that keep private postsecondary schools in Texas from using the title “seminary” and offering theological diplomas without government approval. This is a huge victory for seminaries across the state. They have gained the freedom to train ministers, pastors, and other church workers according to faith-based beliefs, rather than according to government-imposed standards. Much has been said in recent weeks - both in the media and in local circles – about the megachurch in the Metroplex that refused to allow a memorial service for the openly-homosexual brother of one of the church’s employees. The church had been praying for the brother, at the request of the employee, for quite a long time. The issue became enlightened by the church’s denial of the family’s wishes to have a memorial service at the church. That’s not what churches are supposed to do, is it?
